This is kind of a random summer activity, but last month the kids and I went to the copper mine. I don't know why, but I have always wanted to go. I have lived my whole life fairly close to this little gem, I went to a high school named after it (it was also totally copper crazy, with several references throughout the school being made to "copper" and our mascot was the Miners), and it is apparently completely world famous being one of the only things visible on Earth from space. I ask you, who wouldn't want to go see a famous man made hole visible from space? The even more totally awesome thing was that for a whole week in July it was free to visit-sweet! Because of the price of entry and because there are so many cheap people in the area, it was packed. They had everyone load up in tour busses and away we went. The tour bus had tvs showing "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs". I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the bus was a MAJOR highlight to my kids. This place was also Scotty's heaven on Earth. Nothing but massively ginormous tractors and dump trucks everywhere. They even had a display in the museum of toy replicas of the above mentioned trucks and tractors. Oh, how he was digging that! (Get it). Beside seeing the big hole, they showed us a little movie. It was all about the copper mining process. I have to say that I found myself totally in awe of the whole thing-who knew? When we sat down to watch the movie, Scotty whispered to me, "I think this is going to be Cars 2!" How wrong he was. Overall, I think it was a fun outing and something I'm glad I finally saw. Everyone seemed to have fun even though I'm pretty sure all the kids have lost their souvenir from the gift shop. Oh well, you can't win them all.

Did I mention my complete and utter anxiety walking up to this edge. My feet started to feel weird and I had total fear one of us was going to go down. To my relief, there is a big gravel area on the other side of this small fence that would prevent any fall into the giant hole-whew!

Thanks for posting, I have been checking. Cute pictures of the kids. :D
I have always wanted to go there too. Wish I would have known it was free. Now you can cross that off of your bucket list.
